Coming Up with Your Own Unique Save-the-Date Photo Idea

Your save-the-date photos should reflect who you are as a couple! If you love adventure, consider taking photos on a scenic hike, with the mountains or ocean as your backdrop. If you're homebodies, a cozy at-home session with coffee mugs that say your wedding date could be a perfect fit. Think about what represents your relationship best and weave it into your photos.

I love to incorporate a few shots that can be used as a save-the-date or as your wedding website header into engagement sessions, and I thought—why not make a blog about exactly that?

Faceless Save-the-Date Photo Ideas

Your Wedding Venue as Your Save-the-Date Photo

Your wedding venue is a huge part of the day, and I'll bet you're so excited to share it with your guests. So why not make it the star of your save-the-date? A wide shot of the venue, taken on a beautiful day with plenty of open sky, gives you the perfect space (negative space!) to overlay your wedding date or wedding plans. This is a great photo you can take even if you don't have a photographer yet!

A Photo of Your Hands Together

A simple yet intimate way to announce your big day is through a close-up of your hands. You could gently hold hands, almost hold hands, or tilt your hands to show off your rings. It’s a great option for a faceless photo that you could easily take yourself by setting up a tripod or even resting your phone on a tree!

Two hands reaching towards each other in front of a rustic house with a chimney, under a clear blue sky. The mood is peaceful and hopeful.

Get a Classic Photo of Your Ring

Your engagement ring is a symbol of your love and commitment, making it a perfect focal point for your save-the-date photo. You can place it on a meaningful surface, such as a book of love poems, a wedding invitation, or even nestled within a bouquet of flowers.

Scrabble Tiles

If you love puzzles and your names fit together in some way, a Scrabble board with your hands in view would be a lovely way to spell out your message (see what I did there?).

Your Shoes Side by Side

Capture a stylish shot of your wedding shoes and your partner’s shoes neatly placed together, with the wedding date written in chalk or on a cute sign nearby. This works especially well if your footwear choices show off your personalities—whether it's classic heels and polished dress shoes or Converse and cowboy boots!

Wet black dress shoes and sparkly ivory heels on green grass with scattered autumn leaves. Mood suggests a wedding or formal event.

A Close-Up of Hands Holding a Calendar

Print out or circle your wedding date on a calendar and capture a close-up of your hands holding it. This is a great way to keep things minimal yet meaningful, and it instantly tells your guests when to mark their calendars!

Rings in an Open Book

Place your engagement ring (or both rings) on an open book, positioned over a meaningful passage—maybe a love poem, a favorite novel, or even your wedding vows. For an extra touch, angle the rings so they cast a heart-shaped shadow.

Aerial Shot of You Walking Together

Walk hand in hand in a beautiful outdoor setting, with the photographer capturing the moment from above. This creates an elegant, natural shot that focuses on your connection while keeping your faces out of view. (I have a drone, you could book me for this shot!)

Date in the Sand (or Snow!)

If you're having a beach wedding, write your wedding date in the sand and photograph it as the waves roll nearby. For a winter wedding, you could carve the date into fresh snow or arrange pinecones in the shape of numbers.

Holding a Save-the-Date Mug or Coffee Cup

Sip from matching coffee mugs with "Save the Date" and your wedding date printed on them. The focus can be on your hands holding the mugs, with a blurred cozy background like a fireplace or café setting.

What If You Want to Be in Your Photos?

A Silhouette at Sunset

A romantic and artistic option is to have a silhouette shot of you and your partner standing together at sunset. You can hold hands, lean into each other, or even form a heart shape with your arms.

Chalkboard or Sign

Stand together holding a hand-lettered sign with your date. You could even use a film-style clapboard for a cinematic touch.

Balloon Numbers

Each of you holds a number from your date—simple, playful, and easy to execute.

Walking Away: Holding hands and walking away from the camera, with the date on your jackets, shoes, or a sign you’re carrying.

Prism or Mirror Trick

Using a prism or a mirror to reflect part of the date into the shot for a dreamy, unexpected touch.

Polaroids

Take Polaroids of your venue or a calendar with your date on it and hold them up

The Importance of Getting to Know Your Photographer

Your wedding photographer plays a huge role in capturing one of the most important days of your life. A pre-wedding shoot is the perfect opportunity to build a relationship with them, get comfortable in front of the camera, and understand their shooting style. The more relaxed and natural you feel, the better your photos will turn out on the wedding day!

What’s a Pre-Wedding Shoot?

A pre-wedding shoot, also known as an engagement session, is a relaxed photography session before your wedding day. It’s a chance to capture beautiful images of you and your partner, often in a meaningful location or with a theme that reflects your love story. These photos can be used for save-the-date cards, wedding websites, or even printed for display on your big day.

Join me every month while I dive into sessions, show examples of my work in more detail and give advice to other aspiring boudoir photographers on my blog.  What can you hope to achieve reading this blog?

An inside look into creative sessions

Each month I try to experiment with at least one session, these are discounted sessions for clients who are happy to share images and if you'd like to be considered for a creative session please do subscribe for updates. These creative sessions usually create amazingly different photographs unlike most boudoir photographers in the UK and I am always striving for a uniqueness that aligns with my clients personality and individuality.

More in-depth full sessions

I also show more in-depth shoots from parties, cake smashes and engagements among other on location and studio portrait sessions for those wishing to see a more in depth look at how their shoots may look and what I can achieve.

Studio Boundaries

The blog is also where you may wish to read my studio boundaries for Boudoir sessions, these boundaries differ from studio to studio and I want to be upfront about these before you enquire incase you are looking to create images with a partner or video footage etc.

Some tips and tricks I've picked up

I love everything about photography, I definitely identify as a bit of a photography nerd! As I buy new kit and experiment I hope to pass on some of the lessons I learn to other photography nerds!
